Abstract:
Optical computing has been a blue sky dream for scientists for over a decade. In several areas optical processing has made great strides. These areas include optical communication, optical memory, optical scanning, etc. However, the optical computer still remains a dream. Earlier spectacular successes in very high speed optical switches based upon non-linear optical effects in III-V compound semiconductor structures have not led to useful applications. Even in optical communication, the full potential of optics remains unrealized because of lack of more tailorable devices such as wavelength selective detectors.
