Pagination or Media Count:
A new, operational meteorological database has been developed to provide quality controlled observations for the atmospheric analysis and prediction systems at Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center FNOC. Quality control is a vital and necessary first step in atmospheric analysis and prediction since erroneous observations can adversely impact the accuracy of these environmental products. The meteorological observations are subjected to various validation- and error-checks prior to their storage in the operational atmospheric database. This technical note describes the quality control procedures, database structure and data formats used for the operational atmospheric database. It also discusses the specific details pertaining to the local implementation of the quality control system. These include the treatment of multiple, non-identical reports from the same station errors introduced by data processing and the subjective quality control of marine observations. The same quality control procedures and data formats were used by the Naval Postgraduate School for some of the observations gathered during the Tropical Cyclone Motion experiment TCM-90.
