Abstract:

A problem has been perceived in diagnostic support for complex modern weapons systems. Each of the services has undertaken development of diagnostic aids to address this need. To evaluate the design of such a device, it is necessary to understand the process of diagnosis and current research in the field of diagnostic job performance aids. The way a diagnostic aid is developed is based upon certain assumptions about how diagnosis is performed, and what types of knowledge the diagnostician needs at the job site. Expert rules and cognitive models are discussed.
