Abstract:
This document describes a consistently formulated propagation model for systems-oriented predictive codes. Simple models for the mutual coherence function of plane, spherical, and beam waves are developed. The results are given in terms of a path-integrated phase structure function based on Shkarofskys approximation to the Kolmogorow Model. A scheme for approximating the short-term mutual coherence function by approximating the phase structure function is developed. To provide a more quantitative measure of the recoverable degradation in an image, the instantaneous autocorrelation function for a refocused beam was simulated by using a phase-screen model. The results show that the short-term and long-term coherence measures are not linearly related. The difference is attributed to amplitude scintillation, which is not comprehended in phase reconstruction schemes.
