Abstract:

The Articulated Total Body ATB Modeling System is needed to address a variety of new technologies and challenges which are changing the operating environment of aircrews. These changes include increasing aircraft performance, which increase the need for expanding the safe ejection envelope. The increasing complexity of the weapon systems, cockpit, and missions have also stimulated the development of equipment to aid the aircrews night vision goggles, helmet mounted sights, and helmet mounted displays. Each of these devices has the potential for impacting the safe ejection envelope and increasing the injury potential of an ejection as well as increasing the fatigue of normal flying. While microelectronics, fiber optic technology, and miniaturization can keep the equipment weight small, even these weights at 15 G ejection acceleration may pose a substantial injury hazard.
