Abstract:

The Composite Health Care System CHCS is an integrate medical information system. Ireland Army Community Hospital IACH at Fort Knox, Kentucky is serving as the operational test site for the CHCS. Little guidance was provided IACH as to how to structure and staff its information management division IMD to support such large operational, maintenance, and training requirements. This study documents the various tasks which were added to the IMDs responsibilities as a result of the implementation of the CHCS. The number of computer-based information systems in private and public sector hospitals have grown exponentially during the past twenty years. A new computer products and services industry has developed to supply the tools necessary to build computer-based information systems. The CHCS may eventually support Department of Defense medical treatment facilities around the world. The objectives of the CHCS are to 1 improve quality of patient care, 2 increase efficiency of operations, 3 enhance accuracy and availability of information, and 4 provide standardized computer support of essential facility operations.
