Neurotransmitter Supression of the In Vitro Generation of a Cytotoxic T- Lymphocyte Response against the Syngeneic MOPC-315 Plasmacytoma

The effects of norepinephrine and related molecules on the generation of antitumor cytotoxic activity were determined. Cytotoxic activity was generated by coculture of normal spleen lymphocytes from BALBc mice with syngeneic MOPC-315 plasmacytoma cells and was assayed by the Cr release assay. At concentrations 100 microns, the catecholamines norepinephrine, epinephrine, isoproterenol and dopamine inhibited the development of cytotoxic activity by 50-90. However, at concentrations of 0.1 to 1 microns norepinephrine but not the other catecholamines enhanced the generation of cytotoxicity.
