Abstract:

Reserve forces comprise over half of the wartime strength of the armies of NATO member nations. With so much of this strength in a mobilizable status, it is important that commanders and staffs of NATO organizations know and understand the reserve systems on which they would depend in wartime. This study seeks to provide an overview of these systems in an unclassified format which can be used as a reference document. With the Conventional Forces Europe Treaty, budget cuts, and manpower shortfalls, some NATO countries have proposed changes which will impact on their reserve systems. To the extent information was available, these proposals have been outlined in the applicable chapters. Descriptions of NATO affiliated associations are also incorporated, as are some basic conclusions and recommendations.
