Abstract:

This article seeks to answer the question of how important strategic ASW might be in the operational as opposed to the declaratory maritime strategies of the US and USSR in the 1990s by addressing factors which would enter into their decision making. It presents a series of propositions and supporting information or arguments about strategic submarine forces in the 1990s, the strategic ASW options open to the superpowers, and their views on strategic ASW today. It then focuses on those issues upon which decisions about the future would probably rest What are the prospects for success What are the consequences for success That is, is there a compelling strategic rationale, a compelling benefit, to undertake a dedicated strategic ASW campaign
