Abstract:

A small team comprising of scientists from France, the United Kingdom, Japan and the U.S., has performed collaborative research on high transition temperature ceramic superconductors and inorganic nonlinear optical composites, the BiCuSrCaOx system was found to be glass-forming. The glass can be crystallized to give a superconducting glass-ceramic was machinable. The glass was also infrared transmitting to about 7 microns. Nanocomposites containing crystallites of CdS in both glass and organically-modified silicates ORMOSIL have been prepared via the sol-gel technique. Quantum confinement was demonstrated in these nonlinear optical materials.
