Abstract:

The Armys Sense and Destroy Armor SADARM, a new system of target- sensing munitions, is being developed to enhance the capabilities of the 155- millimeter mm howitzer and the Multiple Launch Rocket System MLRS to attack targets such as self-propelled enemy artillery, when stationary. Through fiscal year 1991, the Congress has provided about 600 million in research, development, test, and evaluation funding for the system. In 1988, we reported on the status of the SADARM system. As you requested, we have updated that analysis to determine 1 actions taken by the Army to comply with congressional directives, 2 the current program schedule, 3 the Armys estimate of the programs total cost, 4 the status of technical development, 5 test results to date, and 6 the Armys assessment of the counterfire mission and of SADARMS ability to meet that requirement.
