Abstract:

An algorithm has been developed to describe the exchange flow through a horizontal vent, such as a ships hatch. Until recently, there was no way to fully characterize the flow through a horizontal vent. A zone model is used to test the validity of a horizontal ceilingfloor vent flow algorithm. Development of this algorithm makes it possible to fully characterize vertical flow through a horizontal vent. The algorithm is incorporated into a computer model written to simulate a compartment, with a fire inside, ventilated only through a hole in the ceiling. Model predictions are shown to be comparable to small scale experimental results. To further test and confirm this algorithm, a similar comparison should be made on a larger scale.
