The Military Nutrition Division of the U.S Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine USARIEM asked the Committee on Military Nutrition Research CMNR to review the significant reports recently published dealing with Nutrition and Health and to consider how their recommendations pertain to the nutritional policies and practices of the military. During parts of two meetings of the CMNR on December 8, 1989 and June 28-29, 1990 the recommendations of the Surgeon Generals Report on Diet and Health 2, and the Year 2000 Health Objectives for the Nation 3 were reviewed by representatives of these agencies. The CMNR was also briefed on the results of dietary surveys conducted over the past few years at several military installations. In addition, a presentation of some of the activities in the promotion of sound nutrition and health programs for Army personnel was provided for the information of the Committee.
