Abstract:

This study examines the impact adding a fourth rifle company would have on the light infantry battalions ability to meet conflicting demands across the conflict spectrum. Since its activation there has been considerable debate concerning the proper structure of the light infantry division LID. Most critics focus at the division level and simply recommend the addition of armor and more antitank transportation assets. They feel that this would make the division stronger and more survivable on future battlefields. None however, have focused on the divisions basic source of combat power and the building block of rapid deployment packages the light infantry battalion.
