The purpose of this double blind study was to determine if labetalol 10 mg or lidocaine 1.5 mgkg would blunt the cardiovascular responses to laryngoscopy and oral endotracheal intubation compared to a control. It was found that there was no significant differences between groups in blunting the cardiovascular responses to endotracheal intubation. Both lidocaine and labetalol had a significant effect on controlling a rise in heart rate and systolic blood pressure. However neither lidocaine or labetalol had any significant effect on preventing a rise in diastolic blood pressure.
