Abstract:

Sonobuoys are used in individually to sense underwater acoustic signals. A coherent processed, beamformed array of sonobuoy could result in a powerful, highly directional, large-aperture sensor. For the sonobuoy array concept to succeed, the relative locations of the individual array hydrophones must be determined and tracked. This report presents a design of an array- element localization AEL sonobuoy after considering sonobuoy array properties, environmental influences, candidate sonobuoy array elements, and AEL accuracy. This AEL sonobuoy design is validated using experimental results from a prototype implementation.
