The development of advanced propulsion systems for future aircraft and missiles involves the thermal analysis of all components to achieve higher efficiency and reliability in engine performance. Major goals of thermal analysis are to determine the mechanism of combustion, products of combustion, and internal fluid flow patterns of combusting fluids. The majority of data obtained in these development programs is thermal information derived from thermocouples. A thermocouple is a junction of two dissimilar metals that produce electricity by direct application of heat. The thermocouple is a single, efficient, and cost effective device when a small number of data points are required. However, when thermal information is desired over a large surface, thermocouples can reach their limitations.
