Abstract:

The leukotrienes have emerged as an important class of biological mediators, although little information is available regarding their effects on behavioral processes. They have physiological roles in vasoregulation, neurotransmission hormonal regulation, smooth muscle contraction, and may also participate in inflammatory processes, anaphylactic shock and asthma. The peptide leukotrienes are derived from arachidonic acid through the lipoxygenase pathway and consist of leukotrienes LT C4, D4, and E4. Some biological activities attributed to LTC4 may be indirect through its conversion to LTD4 or LTE4.
