Abstract:

An effective computational strategy is developed for generating the response of complex systems using small or large perturbations from the response of a simple structure or a simpler mathematicaldiscrete model of the original structure. Two general approaches are developed for selecting the simpler model and establishing the relations between the original and simpler models. The two approaches are decomposition or partitioning strategy, and hierarchical modeling strategy. Two effective partitioning strategies are used. The first is based on uncoupling of load-carrying mechanisms, and the second is based on symmetry transformations. The hierarchical modeling used is the predictor-corrector iterational process based on using a simple mathematical model in the predictor phase and correcting the response using a more accurate mathematical model.
