The purpose of the work was to investigate the potential for fabricating holographic coatings HCs with nearly arbitrary reflectivity profiles. The desire reflectivity spectrum of the HC could, for example, be the optimum matched filter for detecting a specified target against a bright high clutter background. Once the desired spectral profile of the filter was calculated using well known matched filter theory, holographic techniques would be used to produce the filter. The analysis presented in this report has shown that such a procedure will work and allows the filter to be fabricated much more easily than would be the case for conventional multi-layer dielectric coatings, deposited one layer at a time. Detailed analysis is presented for the case of HCs designed for the detection of missile plumes against an Earth background in the UV and visible spectral regions.
