Abstract:

The reactivity of the ground state of bismuth monofluoride has been investigated with a number of fluorine atom donors at several different temperatures. The measurements have been accomplished both by means of a time resolved, photolytically initiated experiment and on steady-state densities in a flow tube reactor. Both methods provide consistent results. The rate coefficients obtained span a range of over 3 orders of magnitude F2 is found to be fairly efficient while the series of nitrogen fluorides NF2, NF3, N2F4 is quite inert. We observe BiFXO formation with a rate coefficient of 8.1 x 10- 12 cm3molecule-sec from NF2 Bi following the photolysis of BiCH33 at 193 nm. We are also able to estimate a formation constant for Bi F2. The stability of BiCH33 with NF2 is discussed. JS
