Abstract:

Succinylcholine is often used as the neuromuscular relaxant to facilitate endotracheal intubation in the patient presenting for emergency surgery. However, it is contraindicated in some patient subgroups. The purpose of this double blind, randomized study was to investigate the use of the combination of atracurium and vecuronium compared to vecuronium used alone for accomplishing skeletal muscle relaxation to facilitate endotracheal intubation. This study was designed to test the hypotheses that the combination of atracurium 0.40 mgkg plus vecuronium 0.10 mgkg combination group will result in a significantly shorter onset time and duration of action and will produce better intubating conditions with no differences in cardiovascular effects compared to vecuronium 0.28 mgkg vecuronium group administered alone intravenously.
