Abstract:
Current design process limitations inhibit the most effective use of human factors data in the design of complex man-machine systems. These limitations are described and a possible methodological solution is offered that incorporates human factors issues into the conceptual phase of system design. A current Air Force weapon system is reviewed historically and an application of the methodology to this system is reported. The methodological approach uses subject-matter experts to assess various human performance issues on hypothetical systems through mental imagery. In-depth research was required to fully describe the hypothetical systems so that conceptualized operations could be conducted. Lessons learned are presented.
