Abstract:

A direct simulation of fully developed turbulent channel flow with heat transfer has been performed through a direct solution of the time-varying, incompressible, Navier-Stokes equations. Instantaneous streamwise, spanwise, and normal velocity as well as other turbulence quantities, have been computed. Comparison is made with experimental measurements in the literature. There are discrepancies in the maximum values of the second- through fourth-order statistics. The maximum value of the streamwise turbulence intensity is about ten percent lower than what is found experimentally. The unusually high flatness at the wall suggests that more resolution is required near the wall to sort out the contributions of various sized structures, although calculations with less resolution seem to capture the smallest relevant scales of motion.
