Abstract:

The general goal of the ONR project is to determine the neural basis of learning and memory, i.e., how the brain stores and retrieves memory. More specifically we are determining how the hard-wired innate part of the neural system interfaces with the plastic learned part. The special form of learning which is the focus of this project is conditioned taste aversions CTAs, i.e., learned aversions to the taste of a food or fluid when consumption of that substance is followed by illness. In order to achieve this general goal, neurobiological and computational analyses of the neural network essentials for CTA are being integrated. The essential neurobiological and network for CTA is being identified and characterized and computational models for the CTA neural circuit are being developed.
