Abstract:

Optical transition radiation OTR can be used as a beam diagnostic system for charged particle beams. The experimental setup developed here demonstrates the capability to observe and measure OTR due to an electron beam from a linear accelerator. The setup is compact, simple, and readily adapted to experimental work. Through the use of two software programs QuickCapture and Image 1.14 and the QuickCapture frame grabber board, both qualitative and quantitative results are possible. One of the useful qualitative results is a three-dimensional beam profile, which is quickly produced from a captured image. The system measured the relative intensity with a 3 variation between several images of the same source. Angular measurements of OTR can be made with an angular resolution of 600 microradians. jhd
