The purpose of this project was to identify and develop prophylactic anti-cyanide agents including metal complexes, alkylidines, metalloporphyrins and aldehyde and ketone cyanohydrin formers. The screen involved pre- administration of drugs to mice at 15 and 60 minutes, followed by 2 lethal dose- 50s of potassium cyanide. Out of forty-three drugs, only nickel II chloride, cobaltII-chloride and 2-carboxybenzaldehyde survived the screen. The affinity of lower oxidation states of cyanocobaltIIIporphyrins and metalethylenediaminetetraacetic acid adducts for cyanide was probed, and complexes that selectively release a cyanide specific metal upon demand were investigated.
