On November 6, 1989, elections conducted in Namibia portend the future independence of Africas last colony. The independence of Namibia and recent events in South Africa place U.S. foreign policy in Southern Africa at a crossroads. How the United States responds to the needs of the new Namibian government could have significant implications for U.S. relationships in Southern Africa. This study will review Namibias preparedness for independence and U.S. interests in Namibia. It will recommend a foreign policy for future United States dealings with Namibia.
