Abstract:

The true test of military systems and personnel is their ability to operate efficiently in the high stress combat environment. This is especially true in the field of combat maintenance, because the maintenance function is essential to maintaining the high rate of sorties required on the future battlefield. Yet maintenance personnel, although highly trained and skilled technicians, receive little preparation for the extreme stresses of the combat environment. The present effort takes a unique and innovative approach, utilizing a meta-analytic technique, to identify the stress factors that restrict or limit effective performance. Preliminary analyses examining the effects of time pressure, group pressure, and noise on performance indicate that this approach is technically sound and of significant practical value. eg
