Abstract:

Over the past three decades, Australian Defence Departments have sponsored significant research effort on aspects of the marine environment that affect the performance of sub-surface defence systems. The reasons for this effort on Defence Oceanography, and its achievements to date, are discussed and related to changes in the requirements of the Maritime Defence Oceanography, and the environmental parameters that have an impact on this aspect of maritime defence are described. The progress that has been made by research into understanding these parameters is summarised with emphasis on the ocean areas around Australia. The two main objectives of the research have been 1 to contribute to data base or climatology mainly useful for parameters that vary predictably with time and ii to develop algorithms from which randomly- varying parameters that are remote in either space or time may be predicted from observable conditions. As has happened in the past, advances in Defence Oceanography will stimulate technological innovations that will, in turn, generate new and unexpected questions about the marine environment. eg
