The Moving Platform Simulator 2: A Networked Real-Time Visual Simulator with Distributed Processing and Line-of-Sight Displays

Previous research has produced a real-time Moving Platform Simulator using Defense Mapping Agency digital terrain elevation data and a Silicon Graphics, Inc. Iris 4D70GT graphics workstation. This study is a continuation of that effort with the multiple goals of investigating the effects on simulator performance of using higher resolution terrain and different terrain drawing algorithms. Also investigated was the integration of realtime, actual platform intervisibility determinations into the simulator. Included in this effort was a study of modeling time and a real world coordinate system. Additional work was performed on using a distributed computed architecture to maximize performance.
