Abstract:

The signal strength and the phase angle of the eddy current indication is a function of metal integrity, stand off yield strength, hardness, grain structure, and electrical conductivity. This concept was used to differentiate between grade 5,8, and 8.2 bolts. The statistical analysis of the data obtained from this study shows a high degree of correlation between bolt grade and eddy current indications. Tests were also conducted to detect 5 surface cracks of various orientation and locations using the same eddy current setup. It is concluded that eddy current technique can be used as a reliable inspection method to detect cracks and to differentiate between different grades of bolts.
