Abstract:

Since we have begun our detailed study of boron cluster ion reaction dynamics, we have tried to present our cross section measurements in a form most useful to combustion modelers and others interested in the reactivity of boron, and in oxidation processes in particular. An effective way we have found to do this is to convert our data into reaction efficiencies or the probability of reaction per surface collision. By calculating these reaction probabilities as a function of temperature, we can provide combustion modelers with the necessary data to calculate reaction rates for boron combustion processes under whatever conditions seem appropriate. The kinetic parameters are based on averages of cross sections measured for reactions of boron cluster ions with the gases in question. We present both total reaction probabilities and also the branching fractions to different products. The method for converting from cross sections to rates is discussed and results are given for reaction with oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, water methane, fluoromethane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and silane.
