Abstract:

The response of any Optical System, used in either a weapon or surveillance mode, is dependent upon the emission of electromagnetic energy from both target and background occupying the field of view. The background not only contributes to the infrared scene clutter but, additionally, by reflection and absorption, can significantly contribute to the targets signature. Since the maritime environment can be conceived as containing an opaque homogeneous body of water, its signature will depend on upon the predictable behaviour of such a surface in response to the natural elements. This report proposes a statistical-numerical method which can be used to obtain the infrared signature of both a calm and wind roughened sea in the 1 to 15 micron waveband.
