Alternate Oxidation Techniques for the YBa2Cu3O7 Family of High Temperature Superconductors

Maintaining the oxygen content of the ceramic superconductor YBa2Cu3Ox near x7 is known to be a critical parameter for achieving optimum metallic and superconducting behavior. A high temperature furnace anneal in Oxygen 2 is the usual approach. However, it has been shown by Tarascon et al that a low temperature 80C anneal in an oxygen plasma can almost totally replenish the oxygen in an oxygen depleted sample. Results will be presented showing the efficacy of lower temperature anneals in an environment rich in monatomic oxygen and ozone such as that easily achieved in an atmosphere of oxygen irradiated with ultraviolet light.
