Abstract:

The phototoxic effect of blue light on isolated pigment epithelium will be investigated. The emphasis will be on functional changes rather than a description of pathology. The pigment epithelium is analogous to the blood-brain barrier therefore, the principal functions to be investigated are the integrity of the barrier system and the transport system and the transport systems known to operate in the pigment epithelium. The effects of blue light on leucine transport across the isolated bovine retinal pigment epithelium RPE have been continued to determine if Vitamin E and melatonin provided any protective action. Similar studies on the transport of glutamate in the retina to choroid direction were also completed.
