Abstract:

The Defense Production Act of 1950 authorizes the president to take certain prioritization and allocation steps within the scope of economic policies for materials that are vital to national security and defense. This study explores the genesis of the Defense Production Act of 1950, and its relevant amendments to determine how the government will implement and trigger its provisions. The study explores the Defense Production Act with a view toward energy resources. Further, the current rules, regulations, policies, and organizations of the Federal Government that are responsible for implementation of the Defense Production Act are examined. Finally, some conclusions are drawn as to the adequacy of current procedures and what might be done to improve them.
