Abstract:

The subject of this investigation is the deformation and consequent lack of aim that a gun tube undergoes as a result of its initial imperfections. By initial imperfections, we mean the non-straightness of the centroidal axis of the gun tube. In reality, the centroidal axis is a general space curve. For the sake of analysis, however, it is assumed to be helical in shape. The gun tube is modeled as a rod of linearly elastic material, encased in a perfectly straight cylindrical thermal shroud to protect it from non-uniform temperature changes. The interaction between these two elements, namely the shroud and the gun tube renders the problem of finding the muzzle end displacement of the gun tube statistically indeterminate.
