Abstract:

The Information Systems laboratory of the Department of Administrative Sciences has installed a UNIX-based workstation for student use. The UNIX operating system, one of the most popular systems available today, is an attempt to provide a powerful operating system that is largely machine- independent. This thesis examines the capabilities and limitations of the UNIX operating system as it pertains to the Information Systems student. It also provides a users manual for the students, thus, allowing them to gain a working knowledge of the system and prepare them to take advantage of its capabilities. The research concludes that, with proper administration, the use of UNIX workstations can be very valuable to the Information Systems student.
