Abstract:

Optical image recognition systems based on optical correlators and distributed holographic interconnections are described and experimentally demonstrated. Correlators which rely on acoustooptic devices, optical disks, photorefractive crystals, and charge coupled devices are described. The capacity for information storage of such correlators is derived. The capacity of volume holograms for high spatial density information storage is derived. The use of photorefractive volume holograms in artificial neural networks is described and demonstrated. Finally, an analysis of the use of binary filters in pattern recognition systems is presented and optical neural networks which rely on higher order correlations are described.
