EUREKA (European Research Coordination Agency) Program Update to March 1988

The European Research Coordination Agency EUREKA Program was discussed in two recent issues of European Science Notes. EUREKA resulted from a proposal made in 1985 by President Mitterand. The dominant fields of technology in the adopted projects are information systems, biotechnology, and production technology. The cost of the development effort in the 165 projects is about 4 billion ECU currently about 4 billion over the lifetime of the projects. There are at present 20 EUREKA members - 19 countries and the European Commission. The EUREKA projects. Also identified are the participating interested countries, the cost, duration, and status. The topics under which these projects fall are information technology robots, manufacturing, and process control biotechnology new materials environment telecommunications transportation energy and lasers.
