Abstract:

If a blast wave propagates in a medium where a thin layer of high-temperature gas is located near the ground, a precursor develops. This work was undertaken to increase the understanding of the fluid dynamics of airblast precursors. A series of shock tube experiments were conducted using a helium layer from a porous plate and a heated plate to create a surficial high-sound-speed layer. A series of small charge tests were conducted in an enclosed environment using a helium induced high sound speed layer introduced from a circularly symmetrically ceramic porous plate.
