Abstract:

The Dow Chemical Company has developed an interesting ne w class of perfluorosulfonate ionomers PFSIs. We have conducted a broad-based investigation of the supermolecular structures of these PFSIs. Small angle x-ray scattering data showed that the PFSIs contain ionic clusters. The sizes of these clusters vary with equivalent weight and water content. Wide-angle x-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry demonstrated that PFSIs with equivalent weights greater than ca. 800 g mole are partially crystalline. The extent of crystallinity increases with equivalent weight. Surprisingly, the melting point of the Dow PFSIs varied only slightly with equivalent weight. This suggests that these are block-type copolymers.
