Atmospheric soundings taken during the Western Mediterranean Circulation Experiment of June 1986 are found to contain inaccuracies due to instrument miscalibrations and ship-induced distortions. Once a criterion is established to identify those soundings in need of surface-layer modification, several corrective techniques are applied to the data. It is found that a profile correction method using surface measurements corrected for ship-induced distortions is best able to provide realistic and representative soundings within the surface layer.
