Abstract:

The U.S. Army Defense Ammunition Center and School USADACS was requested by the U.S. Army Armament, Munitions, and Chemical Command AMCCOM to conduct transportability testing of the Survivability Overpack Container SOC. LoadingTiedown procedures for designated tactical vehicles were developed and tested for the SOC without casters, with solid rubber casters, with polyurethane casters and with phenolic casters. The SOC was road-tested on the M923 5-ton cargo truck, M871 semitrailer and Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck HEMTT . The instrumentation, as desired, was recorded during the testing program. In Test No. 8, the casters were removed from the SOC. The SOC was positioned crosswise on the M871 semitrailer and secured with a single web strap tiedown assembly from each of four tiedownlift rings. An additional two web strap tiedown assemblies were used over the top of the SOC. The SOC completed the road hazard course twice for the purpose of instrumentation data accumulation. In the first complete road test, lateral forces were measured and during the second complete test, vertical forces were measured. Minimal movement was observed during either test. The securement method used in the two tests is proper.
