Abstract:

The United States is faced with an increased threat to its security and national interests posed by the Soviet Union in the Pacific Basin. Faced with the economic realities of having to reduce its defense budget in the wake of Soviet expansionism, the US must adopt a new strategy that maximizes the effectiveness of all available assets. The author proposes expanding the ongoing military civic action program in the Pacific, as well as combining it with the efforts of the Peace Corps under auspices of the Department of State. Following some background information concerning each activitys capabilities and current operations, the author presents a proposal for formally combining their efforts focusing on the corresponding advantages and disadvantages.
