Abstract:

Until recently, research and development efforts in the database management systems area were focused on supporting traditional business applications. The design of database systems capable of supporting non-traditional application areas, including engineering applications for CADCAM and VLSI data, scientific and statistical applications, expert database systems which can really be viewed as adding database system technology to an AI application, and imagevoice applications, has now emerged as an important new direction for database system research. The new applications differ from more conventional applications like transaction processing and record keeping in a number of important areas 1 Data modeling requirements 2 Processing functionally 3 Concurrency control and recovery mechanisms 4 Access methods and storage structures. Keywords EXODUS computer architecture.
