Abstract:

This document discusses WE, a graphics-based Writing Environment. It provides tools to support the entire writing process, from brainstorming to document revision. Users visually transform their ideas from a network to a hierarchy defining document structure. The prototype system is written in Smalltalk-80, an object-oriented interpreted language. This document presents the architecture of the WE version 1.0 prototype system. Sections cover the high-level component layout, the class hierarchy, the flow of control, the support framework, and the database support. Readers should be familiar with object-oriented programming in general and Smalltalk in particular to understand the note completely.
