Abstract:

Spin casting is a commonly used technique for producing thin, uniform polymer films, especially for semiconductor fabrication. There has been little attention given to the response of the polymer conformation, especially at the molecular level, to this non-equilibrium casting technique. Our investigations have focused on the use of excimer fluorescence to elucidate chain conformation and fluorescent probe environment. Spin casting parameters such as spin speed, solvent volatility and compatibility, and polymer concentration and molecular weight have been investigated. Intrinsic monomer and excimer fluorescence of spun cast polystyrene films were measured.
