Abstract:

A model is presented to analyze theoretically an inverse railgun used as a power supply for a railgun. The governing equations are developed and it is shown that they possess an exact analytic solution in the limit that resistive effects can be neglected. These limiting-case solutions are used to study qualitatively the behavior of the inverse railgun in this configuration. More general numerical solutions, which account approximately for resistive effects, are then undertaken and discussed in some detail. Emphasis is placed on determining design parameters which optimize energy transfer between the two devices. The analysis suggests that the railgun, unlike most other loads, can be powered effectively with an inverse railgun.
